After the adventure of Mkhambathi and the camel trophy conditions the South Coast seemed rather tame, coupled with a howling wind, my brief stop at Mantis and Moon was more a chance to charge my gear and think about where to head next.
Mantis and Moon is a pretty sweet backpackers with all the usual amenities but its definite upside has to be its location in Umzumbe and the piece of land it sits on.
Decorated in African bric a brac, surf images and references to loving and living life it’s definitely worth a stop on your journey up towards Durbs.
The doubles are swell little wooden cottages with en-suite outdoor bathrooms hidden amongst the jungle of banana trees linked by wooden walk ways, If you’re looking for a room with a view you can stay in the tree house accommodation or when budget demands the dorms are pretty cool too.
With numerous chill areas all hidden and separated by the teeming jungle its easy to find a place to chill quietly and read in comfy chair.
A swimming pool, hot tub and a bar, that is constantly on the go, round out a really cool backpackers . If you visit the South Coast, this is definitely your stop.
Personally Umzumbe reminds me of so much of beautiful coastline ruined by face brick mansions and Tuscan Villa’s but i guess that’s the nature of humans. The backpackers goes along way to hiding all of it on its own little piece of paradise.
