Twenty minutes from Hogsback there is a new backpackers that offers a chance to stay local. This is not a walking tour, or a bus in bus out kind of experience, this is village life.
Located in the village Elundini and started a bunch of months ago by Elliot and Lieve, the backpackers is made up of a couple of rondavels that overlook the village and mountain alike.
The main house is more a banquet hall, with a long dinner table, comfy couches, a fireplace and the usual self catering kitchen and views every which way you look.
They offer a bunch of activities that range from bread making, Xhosa lessons, horse rides, day hikes and short walks. And at the end of all that they'll feed you a delicious meal in the evenings to go with the cold beer.
I have been to plenty places on my travels that offer tours to villages and the chance to experience Xhosa culture, few I imagine are and will be as authentic as the experience Elundini has to offer.
Go check it out if you want a real deal travel experience.
